Initial Balance (IB)

The price range established during the first 30 minutes of trading (9:30-10:00 AM ET) — a key reference for the entire session.

The Initial Balance (IB) is the high-low range printed during the first 30 minutes of regular trading hours (9:30-10:00 AM ET). Market Profile theory considers the IB as the "auction opening" that sets the day's framework.

Why the IB matters for 0DTE:

  • IB width predicts session type — narrow IB suggests range-bound, wide IB suggests trend
  • IB breaks signal directional conviction
  • The direction of the IB break often sets the tone for the rest of the session
  • Professional traders use the IB high and low as reference levels for the entire day

SPXXL tracks IB formation in real-time during the 9:30-10:00 window and compares the IB range to historical averages. A narrow IB (below median) with low volume suggests a Balanced Day or Volatility Compression. A wide IB with expanding volume signals potential for Trend or Expansion.

IB Extension:

  • Single extension: price breaks one side of the IB (common in mild trends)
  • Double extension: price breaks both sides (common in Liquidity Sweeps)
  • No extension: price stays within IB all day (Balanced Day or Compression)

The SPXXL dashboard shows IB high, low, range, break status, and extension tracking in real-time.
